Basis of the edition

The present edition is based on the photographs available at the Mainzer Photoarchiv of the Hethitologie Portal Mainz, as well as the available hand-copies and relevant secondary literature up to 2019. When the original manuscripts have been collated, this is noted in the commentary.

Commentary

Collated (March 2020). This fragment of a thick two-columned tablet (max preserved thickness 5 cm) preserves portions of the lower half of the obverse and the upper half of the reverse. It is written in a tiny (2 mm), cursive script with shallow impressions, a conspicuous inclination of the aperture angle of vertical wedges, vertical wedges slanting to the left, and many lines of the script “invading” the intercolumnium. Also, the lines of the script tend to raise from left to right, and there is an offset in the alignment of the 7 mm wide intercolumnium across the two faces of the tablet. The handwriting is very similar to those of KBo 13.250 and KBo 49.111, but a join with the former fragment is ruled out by the different width of the intercolumnium. An indirect join with KBo 49.111 is possible, based on the identical clay, handwriting and sign variants, on the compatible curvature, and the use of plene spellings, e.g. NA₄ḫu-u-wa-ši (KBo 26.151 obv. ii 16′, KBo 49.111 rev. 10′). The spelling pé-danₓ-zi in KBo 26.151 obv. ii 6′ against pé-e-da-an-zi in KBo 49.111 rev. 7′ cannot constitute an argument against the join, since a-danx-zi in KBo 49.111 obv. 5′ shows that the scribe made use of multiple spelling conventions. For the sake of caution, however, the two fragments are considered separately in the present treatment.

Palaeography: Both older and newer LI (i 6′, 14′).

ii 10′: The epithet of Šawuška (DLIŠ) is apparently one derived from walliya-, like the common walliwalli-.

iii 9′: For another example of zankilatar “fine, punishment” in the context of local cults see KUB 56.39.

iii 12′: Note the possible mention of the “cella of the pithos.” Alternatively, the sign ḪAR is to be interpreted as phonetic complement of É.ŠÀ. Note that not only ḪAR follows immediately É.ŠA, but also ŠI follows immediately ḪAR (somewhat differently in the copy).
